EMS - BESS Benefits

BESS – ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

  • Load Shifting Discharging the battery during peak tariff times and charging the battery during off-peak tariff times. This assists with reducing demand on the grid and also reducing the client’s electricity bills.
  • Peak Shaving Proactively managing overall demand to eliminate short-term demand spikes, which can cause high peak demand charges. Through this application overall cost of demand charges are reduced.
  • Power Factor Correction Bringing the network as close as possible to unity through injecting leading/lagging currents – saving on additional charges.
  • Back-Up Ensuring an additional power source is available in the event of power failure on the network. Reliable and cost-effective.
  • PV self-consumption optimisation By slightly oversizing the PV, excess PV can be stored in the battery and be used in peak tariff times.

The Northern Cape Solar Corridor

The Government of South Africa has embarked on a large-scale project to industrialize the Northern Cape Province by placing Renewable Energy at the center of developmental initiatives – Dept of Trade & Industry, Dept of Minerals & Energy, National Treasury, Provincial Government & Municipalities.

  • Solar Corridor prefeasibility study conducted by Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) in 2010
  • CCI identified Northern Cape as suitable location for Solar Corridor – similar to the DTI concept of IDZ at various nodes around the country
  • The 5GW Solar Corridor consists of Solar Parks to be developed in Upington, Groblershoop, Prieska, Postmasburg and De Aar – 1000MW each
  • Kapa Bokone has been appointed as the Corridor Controlling Body (CCB)

Location of Upington 1000MW Solar PV Park

  • Located near Upington +- 10km from Upington Airport
  • Klipkraal Farm 451 (5753 ha)
